Edge Lit Display

This experiment works on property of refraction and total internal reflection. The material is transparent Perspex that allows light to pass through it. Most of the light is reflected inside the Perspex sheet. By damaging the smooth surface of the material we can create many tiny different angles that will allow the light to refract out of the material.

  1. Interesting little project. What tool did you use to etch the perspex?

    1. I used an old soldering tip that I was going throw away to melt the perspex a little. It's not really the recommended thing to do but I managed to get a much finer etch compared to an ordinary rotary tool.

    2. If you want to make one of these, etch the design on the back of the perspex. It appears to be much more brighter that way.
